1980s Cyclist magazine

You have a few issues of Bicycle Sport in there. That was a different magazine not done by the same people. It didn't last very long, either. Cyclist went for about five years. Bicycle Sport only for a couple, I think. Still longer than the terrible Bicycle Rider, but not as long as Bicycle Guide, which hit its peak in the late 80s but kept going for years after.

I miss the old magazines from the 80s, including Bicycling, Bicycle Guide and Cyclist. That was a time when magazines focused on the joy of just riding, of having fun while improving your health on the side. There were stories about touring on country roads, rides in faraway lands, offbeat equipment just for the fun of it. Today's Bicycling seems to focus on going faster or looking cooler, with $10,000 bikes in every issue.

Everything is relative - I am sure the equipment in the 80s were considered cutting edge and expensive as is the case today.

The economics of the game is to sell you equipment which might or might not make you go faster. These same companies keep magazines in business by advertising.

Companies such as Zipp are selling you a perception of speed at a price. Same thing could be said of Campagnolo in the 80s.

CYCLIST Magazine!
I was the techical editor from 1984 to 1988. CYCLIST was based in Torrance, California.
It's great to see these -- so long ago! Seeing the covers bring back many memories. Thanks for sharing.

CYCLIST Magazine!
I was the technical editor from 1984 to 1988 (actually, I started out as the managing editor).
CYCLIST was based in Torrance, California. John Francis was the editor and was a great mentor to me.
I remember the photo shoots for many of those covers. The model for October 1985 was the photographer's wife. And that's me on the cover of June 1985! Ha ha ha. So great.

It's wonderful to see these covers after so many years!

Thanks for sharing!
